Try Standing Up!Jun 30, 2022
Have you ever worked yourself into a tizzy about something? And realized later on that you had made a mountain of a molehill?
It has happened to the best of us. I recently coached a client who said she felt physical heaviness in her chest because she put so much pressure on herself to accomplish things.
She said she understood intellectually that no one was pressuring her to do those things; she is self-employed and doing well. But she has always told herself the story that Work = Pressure. She also felt she was close to a breakthrough but couldn’t see how to get there.
That reminded me of a story about a tubing trip I took with friends yyyeeaaarrrrssss ago. There were about 10 of us, and I was near the back of the group. There was a rock we had to go over (in my mind, it was a “little cliff”), and they seemed to be going over it very fast. I tried to keep my composure and follow the person in front of me, but I got sideways and tipped out of my tube.
I flailed around for a couple of seconds and finally heard my friend Kevin yell, “stand up!”
I had worked myself into such a tizzy that I couldn’t see that once people got over the “cliff,” they were moving very slowly and even walking with their tubes.
I was so “in it” that I couldn’t see it. I needed an outside perspective to help me get clarity on my situation.
And that is what coaching does; it gives you an outside perspective.
My client was able to see that half the battle was being aware that her thoughts were the source of the pressure she felt. Now we are exploring why she has those thoughts and feelings.
So if you are feeling swept along by the tide of life, maybe you need an outside perspective to show you that all you have to do is stand up.
If so, schedule a free Unleash the Possibilities of You call.
